Should avian flu breakout in the U.S., is there any particular type facemask recommended when in public?

Don't quote me on this, but I've heard about some antiviral masks (They look like a gas mask) you can order that are for use in the event of a biological warfare attack. While I'm sure you'd look pretty funny, they'd probably be your best bet.
