I'm female 32 yes old. On Saturday I just finished a weeks supply of antibiotics for chest infection. My chest is 100 percent better now, no wheeze phlegm ect. I am left with a horrible dry cough though. For last 2 days I have not slept though as I keep getting thes episodes where I lose my breath and I start having a horrible coughing fit. It doesn't happen just WhrnI sleep it happened twice when just sitting watching tv it's like my throat goes into spasm and I'm left gasping for breath. I slept for only 3 hours last night as it happened to me 3 times as I dozed off, and it's just happened again! I actually have noticed that it feels as if something is dripping in the back of my throat on the right side where I feel irritated.. And it seems like that whatever is dripping there is catching my breathe, I've noticed this as I'm now sitting up in bed and I can feel something dripping and it's making me cough every 2 minsnvery violently. My head hurts from coughing so much, I need to sleep so badly but I know what's going to happen and it's very frightening, I am fed up of this and don't know how much more I can take... Any tips or advice??? By the way I have tried bowl of steaming water, cough suppressant, richly cough medicine! Nothing has helped

The dripping sounds like a sinus drainage, which I have all the time. It sounds like you are having spasms too. I have allergies which causes my respiratory infections along with sinus infections and constant sinus drainage. I would suggest you have a doctor look into it, maybe an allergist to see if you are allergic to things. I am on allergy medications and have just started taking the drops for allergies that I am allergic to. I take Mucinex twice a day which keeps the sinuses draining so I don't get an infection. I will pray you get better.

Do you have asthma, or did you when you were a kid?

It is very common for respiratory infection to exacerbate asthma symptoms, even when the infection has been treated. Albuterol works wonders.

The dripping you're describing is another likely contributor. A trial of a decongestant, like a few days of Afrin nasal spray may help.

If it's not getting better soon, chat with your doctor.

maybe you should go back to the doctor, it could be panic attacks, and you think you are choking, so start coughing , try a hot whisky and water, or hot lemon and honey drink...

breathe slowly through your nose, the air you breath in is warmer, and if you breathe in through your mouth, the cold air can start you coughing, ..open a window a bit, for some fresh air....i hope you feel better....

Do you feel the throat spasming or do you just wake up because your throat was spasming? Does something come up with the cough (blood, sputum)? I recommend seeing your primary doctor or the ER for this.
