I've actually had both. Viral is MUCH worse. (I was in ICU for 3 days, and the hospital for 2 weeks.)

As the names suggest, viral pneumonia is the resule of a virus, and bacterial is from a bacteria. Bacterial pnuemonia is usually a lot easier to treat, with antibiotics. Last time I had bacterial, I got a shot, and was almost completely well in 24 hours. Viral pneumonia just has to run it's course, and if I remember correctly, I was on I.V. antibiotics for the whole hospital stay.

Viral pneumonia symptoms include cough, headache, muscular stiffness and aching, shortness of breath, fever, chills, sweating, fatigue, and sore throat. Bacterial pneumonia usually follows a cold. It often starts suddenly with a high fever (over 102 degrees F or 38.9 degrees C) and chills. Difficult or painful breathing and a cough with bloody or yellow sputum are common symptoms. Other signs may include fast breathing, tiredness, abdominal pain, and blue or pale lips and nailbeds.
